Keep essentials handy in this clever handbag, designed by Gayle Bunn. Dimensional cables on a kangaroo pocket, wooden handles, and a neat fringe finish the look.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

101/2″ x 12″/26.5cm x 30.5cm

MATERIALS

  • 2 11/4oz/50g balls (each approx 80yd/ 73m) Patons® Shetland Chunky (acrylic/ wool®) in #2178 blue
  • One pair size 10 (6mm) needles or size to obtain gauge
  • Cable needle
  • Wooden handles

GAUGE

15 sts and 20 rows to 4″/10cm over St st using size 10 (6mm) needles.

Take time to check gauge.

STITCH GLOSSARY

Cr5 : Slip 4 sts onto cn and hold to back, kl, sl last 3 sts from cn to LH needle, bring en to front, k3 from LH needle, k l from cn.

FRONT AND BACK

(make 2 pieces) Cast on 41 sts. Work in St st for 8 1/2″/21.5cm, end with a WS row.

Shape top

Next row (RS) K2, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k2. Next row Purl. Rep last 2 rows 4 times more-31 sts. Next row (RS) Knit. Next row (WS) Knit (for fold line). Beg with a k row, work 6 rows more in St st. Bind off.

Pocket

Cast on 36 sts.

Row 1 (VVS) P2, *k2, p4; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p2.

Row 2 K2, *p2, k2, M1, k2; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2, k2 4 1 sts.

Row 3 P2, *k2, p5; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p2.

Row 4 K2, *P2, Cr5; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2, k2.

Row S Rep row 3. Row 6 K2, *p2, k5; rep from * to last 4 sts, p2, k2.

Row 7 Rep row 3.

Row 8 Rep row 6. Rep rows 3-8 for pat and work 9 rows more.

Top shaping

Next row (RS) K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1. Next row P2, *k2, p 1 , p2tog, p2; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p2-24 sts. Bind off in pat.

FINISHING

Sew pocket to front, leaving top shaping open. Sew side and lower edge seams, leaving sides above top shaping open. Place handles in position and fold top of bag to inside along fold line. Sew facing to WS of bag. Cut 7 1/2“/19cm lengths of yam and, holding 3 strands tog, knot into fringe across lower edge. Trim fringe evenly.
