Garter Rib Poncho Pattern

Liza Prior Limy gives the basic one-piece poncho a makeover with distinc­tive stitching and breezy edging. Garter ribbing adds chunky texture while a bobble border brings a touch of flirty fun.

SIZES

Instructions are written for size Small, Medium. Changes for Large/X-Large are in parentheses.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

Length from shoulder 20 (24)”/50.5 (61 )cm

Width from cast-on to bound-off edge 41 1/2 (52 1/2)”105.5 (133)cm

MATERIALS

9 (13) 3 1/2 oz/ 100g (each approx 100yd/90m) of Crystal Palace Yarns Iceland Solid (merino wool) in #1219 fuchsia

Size 15 (10mm) circular needle. 29″/74cm long or size to obtain gauge

2 long stitch holders

Size P/15 (10mm) crochet hook

GAUGE

12 sts and 17 rows to 4″/10cm over garter rib using size 15 (10mm) needle.

Take time to check gauge.

NOTE

Poncho is knit sideways.

STITCH GLOSSARY

MB ( Make Bobble) K into the front, back. front. back, front of st. turn; k5. turn; p5. turn: k2tog. k1. k2tog, turn; k3tog.

BOBBLED GARTER RIB

(multiple of 2 sts plus 6)

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 *K1, p1; rep from * to end.

Row 3 K2. MB. k to last 3 sts. MB, k2.

Row 4 *K1, p 1 ; rep from * to end.

Rep rows 1-4 for bobbled garter rib.

PONCHO

Cast on 120 (144) sts. Work in bobbled garter rib for 17 (22)”/43 (56)cm. end with a WS row.

Split for neck

Next row Work 60 (72) sts, slip these sts on holder, work to end-60 (72) sts. Work even in pat as established for 31 (35) rows, place these sts on holder.

Next row Slip sts from first holder back to needle and attach yarn at neck edge. Work even in pat as established for 31 (35) rows.

Close neck

Next row (RS) K across all 120 (144) sts. Work even in pat as established for 17 (22)”/43 (56)cm. end with RS row. Bind oil knitwise.
