This traditional beret is perfect for all ages, and will work just as well whether you’re dressing up or dressing down. It’s knitted entirely in stockinette (stocking) stitch, so is a perfect second or third project for new knitters who are ready to tackle a bit of decreasing. And the multicolored yarn is a godsend,as it means you can create lovely stripes without the hassle of changing yarns. I’ve added a coordinating pompom to this version—but it would look good plain as well.

Needles and equipment
US 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles
Yarn sewing needle
A pompom maker to make 23/4in (7cm) pompoms, or two cardboard circles each measuring 23/4in (7cm) in diameter with an 11/4in (3cm) diameter hole in the center.
Gauge (tension)
15 sts and 20 rows in stockinette (stocking) stitch to a 4-in (10-cm) square on US 9 (5.5mm) needles.
Measurements
The finished beret measures approx. 18in (46cm) circumference, 11in (28cm) diameter.
