Self Striping Shawl Pattern

The vespers of color streaming through this shawl designed by Jill Gutman Schoenfuss will remind you of that spe­cial sunset you experience once in a life­time.

SIZES

Instructions are written for one size.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

Length from neck to point 18″/45.5cm Length from point to each front edge 40″/101.5cm

MATERIALS

13/4oz/50g balls (each approx 101yd/ 90m) of Artful Yarns/JCA Broadway (acrylic/mohair) in #4

Size 101/2 (6.5mm) circular needle, 29″ (73.5cm) long or size to obtain gauge

GAUGE

13 sts and 16 rows to 4″/10cm over St st using size 101/2 needle.

Take time to check gauge.

SEED STITCH

Row 1 (RS) *K1, pl; rep from * to end. Row 2 K the purl and p the knit sts. Rep row 2 for seed st.

NOTES

Shawl is worked back and forth in rows on circular needle.

SHAWL

Cast on 130 sts. Working back and forth, work in seed st for 4 rows.

Next row (RS) Work 4 sts in seed st, work in St st to last 4 sts, work in seed st to end. Cont in pat as established until piece measures 17″/43cm from beg, end on a WS row.

Shape shawl at left neck edge

Next row (RS) Work 74 sts in seed st, work 52 sts in St st, work in seed st to end. Next row Work 4 sts in seed st, work 52 sts in St st, work in seed st to end. Rep last 2 rows once more.

Next row (RS) Bind off 70 sts in seed st, work 4 sts in seed st, work 52 sts in St st, work in seed st to end-60 sts. Cont in pat as established, working left front piece of shawl until piece measures 39″/99cm from cast-on edge. Work in seed st for 4 rows. Bind off all sts in pat.

FINISHING

Block piece to measurements.
