RELAXED CABLE PULLOVER

A center horseshoe cable, garter ridges and relaxed silhouette add up to one knockout knit. Designed by Deborah Newton, this casual style features a shirttail back and face-framing high neck. Show in size Medium. The Relaxed Cable Pullover first appeared in the Fall '94 issue of Vogue Knitting.

SIZES

To fit Small (Medium, Large). Directions are for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one figure, it applies to all sizes.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

- Bust at underarm 44 (48, 52)"/112 (122, 132)cm.

- Length (back) 27 (28, 29)"/68.5 (71, 74)cm.

- Length (front) 23 (24, 25)"/58.5 (61, 63.5)cm.

- Sleeve width at upper arm 17 (18, 19)"/43.5 (46, 48.5)cm.

MATERIALS

Original Yarn: 14 (15, 16) 3.5oz/100g balls (each approx 82yd/75m) of Filatura di Crosa/Stacy Charles Zip (cotton 5) in #8 camel (MC). 1 ball or small amount in #10 pale teal (CC).

Substitute Yarn: 21 (24, 26) 1.75oz/50g balls (each approx 52yd/48m) of Tahki Yarns Capri (cotton 5) in #016 navy (MC). 2 balls or small amount #001 white. One pair each sizes 10.5 and 11 (6.5 and 8mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE. Cable needle (cn). Stitch markers and holders.

GAUGE

- 12 sts and 16 rows to 4"/10cm over St st using size 11 (8mm) needles.

- 16 sts and 16 rows to 4"/10cm over garter horseshoe cable pat using size 11 (8mm) needles.

STITCH GLOSSARY

Garter stripe (any number of sts): Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 (RS) Knit. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 Purl. Rows 12-16 Knit. Rep rows 1-16 for garter stripe pat.

Garter horseshoe cable (over 16 sts): Rows 1, 3, 5, 9, 11 (RS) Knit. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 K2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2. Row 7 P2, sl 4 to cable needle (cn) and hold to back of work, k2, then p2, k2 from cn; sl 2 to cn and hold to front of work, k2, p2, then k2 from cn; p2. Rows 12-16 Knit. Rep rows 1-16 for cable pat.

BACK

With smaller needles and CC, cast on 70 (76, 82) sts. K 1 row. P 1 row. Change to MC. P 1 row. Change to larger needles.

Beg pats: Row 1 (RS) K3, place marker (pm), work 24 (27, 30) sts in garter stripe pat, 16 sts in garter horseshoe cable pat, 24 (27, 30) sts in garter stripe pat, pm, k3. Working first and last 3 sts in garter st (k every row), cont in pats as established until piece measures 17 (17.5, 18)"/43.5 (44.5, 46)cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Armhole shaping: Cont in pat, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows—64 (70, 76) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8.5 (9, 9.5)"/21.5 (23, 24.5)cm, end with a WS row.

Shoulder shaping: Bind off 7 (8, 9) sts at beg of next 4 rows, 5 (5, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Sl rem 26 (28, 28) sts to holder.

FRONT

Work as for back until piece measures 13 (13.5, 14)"/33 (34.5, 35.5)cm from beg, end with a WS row. Shape armhole as for back. Work even until armhole measures 7.5 (8, 8.5)"/19 (20.5, 21.5)cm, end with a WS row. Make note of last row of garter horseshoe cable pat worked.

Neck and shoulder shaping: Next row (RS) K24 (27, 30) sts, sl center 16 sts to holder, join 2nd ball of yarn and work to end. Working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 2 sts twice, dec 1 st every other row 1 (2, 2) times, AT SAME TIME, when armhole measures same as back to shoulder, shape shoulders as for back.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles and CC, cast on 26 (26, 28) sts. K 1 row. P 1 row. Change to MC. P 1 row. Change to larger needles. Next row (RS) Knit. Cont in St st (k on RS, p on WS), AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st each side every 6th row 5 times, every 8th row 8 (9, 10) times—52 (54, 58) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 18"/46cm from beg. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING

Block pieces lightly. Sew left shoulder seam.

Neckband: With RS facing, smaller needles and MC, pick up and k26 (28, 28) sts from holder, 10 sts from front neck, pm, 16 sts from holder, pm, 10 sts from front neck—62 (64, 64) sts. Next row (WS) K to marker, rep last row of garter horseshoe cable pat worked on front, k to end. Work sts before and after markers in garter st and cont garter horseshoe cable pat as established on 16 sts between markers until neckband measures 2"/5cm from beg, end with a WS row. Change to CC. K 2 rows. Bind off all sts. Sew right shoulder seam, including neckband. Sew top of sleeve to straight edge of armhole. Sew bound-off sts of body to side edge of sleeves. Sew side seams, leaving 4.5 (5, 5.5)"/11.5 (13, 14)cm open at lower front edge. Sew sleeve seams.
