Hooded Capes with Matching Trews

MATERIALS

Cape 6 (7, 8) ounces 4-ply MAINSAIL or 6(7, 8) ounces HERITAGE 4-ply in two colours, to be knitted together.

4(4,4) ounces Contrast colour 4-ply MAINSAIL or 4-ply HERITAGE.

Trews 9 (10, 11) ounces Contrast colour 4-ply MAINSAIL or 8 (9, 10) ounces
Contrast colour 4-ply HERITAGE to be knitted double.

1 pair No. 9 needles. 1 pair No. 7 needles and 1 circular needle size 7 for sizes 24 inch and 26 inch only.

Length of elastic for waist of trews.

MEASUREMENTS

Cape To fit chest 22 (24, 26) inches.

Front length 16 (17, 18) inches. Round hem 52 (54, 58) inches.

Trews Centre front seam 84 (9, 99) inches. Outside leg length 19 (20, 22) inches.

CAPE

Commence at the neck. Using No. 9 needles and two strands of main colour wools, cast on 8, 78 (80, 82) sts. Break wool. Work thus:-

1st row—Moss st. 8 in 2 strands of c.c. k. in two strands of m.c. to the last 8 sts. moss st. 8 in 2 strands of c.c., using a 2nd ball of c.c. wool.

2nd row—Moss 8 in c.c., p. to last 8 sts, in m.c., moss 8 in c.c., twisting wools when changing colour, this avoids holes in the work.

1st inc. row—Moss 8, k.1 (2, 3). M1k. k.2 (2, 2). * M1k (k.2, M1k) 3 times. k.2 repeat from * 6 times more. M1k. K.2. M1k. K.1 (2, 3), moss 8 (109, 111, 113).

4th row—Moss 8. P. to last 8 sts., moss 8. Change to No. 7 needles (when too many stitches are on the needle for comfortable working, change to the circular needle and work backwards and forwards on this) and work 4 (6, 6) rows in st. st. with moss st. border.

2nd inc. row—Moss 8, k.3 (3, 3). M1k. K.1 (2, 3.) * K.4. M1k. K. 5. M1k. K.3., rep. from * 6 times k.2 (3, 4). M1k. K.3 (3, 3), moss 8. (125, 127, 129), work 5 (7, 7) rows in st. st. with moss st. border.

K.7 (7, 8). M1k. K.3 (3, 3), moss 8. (189, 191, 193). Work 7 rows in st. st. with moss st. border. 7th inc. row—Moss 8, k.2 (3, 3). M1k. K.6 (7, 8). * K.4. M1k. K.15. M1k. K.3, rep. from * 6 times.

K.8 (8, 9). Ml k. K.3 (3, 3), moss 8. (205, 207, 209). Work 7 rows in st. st. with moss st. border. Continue thus increasing 16 sts. on every 8th row and when work measures 74 (8, 84) ins. from beg. end with wrong side row and work slits for armholes, at the same time continuing with increases until sts. number 253 (271, 289) (i.e. 10, 11 and 12 sets of increases).

Arm Slits

Pattern over 28 sts., turn and work 34 in. over these sts., increasing as before on 8th rows. Finish at front edge, break wool. Join in m.c. to rem. sts. and k. until 28 sts. rem. Turn and work 34 in. on these sts., increasing as before. When 2nd piece measures the same as the first, leave sts. on needle and proceed to work the last piece to match. Break wool. Return to beg. of row and work in pattern across all sts. When correct number of increases have been com­pleted work straight until front edges measure 15 (16, 17) ins. Break off main colour wool. Next row—Cast off the 4 border sts. and using c.c. k. to last 4 sts, cast off 4 border sts. Work 14 in. in moss st. in c.c. Cast off in pattern.

Arm Slits

Using No. 9 needles and c.c. pick up and k. 23 sts. along each edge of slit and work in. in moss st. Cast off in pattern. Work the other edges to match and sew ends neatly.

Where alternative figures are given then the first is for the smallest size and the figures in brackets are for the larger sizes.

TENSION

With wool used double 5 stitches to 1 inch.

ABBREVIATIONS

K.  knit; P.  pud; tog.     together; st(s).  stitch(es); beg. beginning; m.c. main colour; c.c. contrast colour; m.1.k. pick up the loop that lies between the stitch just worked and the following stitch and knit into the back of it.

HOOD

Using No. 7 needles and c.c. cast on 82 (86, 90) sts. and work 1+ in. in moss st. Change to m.c. and work in st. st. until hood measures 6+ (7+, 8) ins. from beg.

Shape Back

Cast off 8 sts. at beg. of next 8 rows. Cast off rem. sts.

Pin out to correct measurement and press with hot iron and damp cloth. Join back seam of hood and turn moss st. border in half to wrong side and slip stitch hem into position. Using No. 9 needles pick up and k.62 (70, 78) sts. round neck edge of hood and work 1 in. in st. st. with a border of 4 sts. in moss st. c. colour at each end. Finish with a p. row and make holes on next row thus:—

Moss 4.. w.f., k.2 tog., k.2, rep. from      to last 6

sts., k.2 tog., w.f., moss 4. Continue until neck band measures 11 in. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Press cape lightly with hot iron and damp cloth. Stitch hood to neck edge, using a back stitch seam. Trim hood with pom-pon on crochet cord. Thread twisted cord through holes at neck edge and trim ends of cord with two small pom-pons. Stitch down edges of arm slits. Turn in half and slip st. contrast border down the fronts and round bottom edge of cape. Press well.

TREWS

Wool is used double throughout and the turned up cuff at the bottom of the leg allows for growth.

Right Leg

Using No. 9 needles and double c. wool, cast on
59 (65, 71) sts. and work in k.1, p.1 rib for 1 in.

Change to No. 7 needles and work in st. st. for 1 in. ending with p. row.

Shape Back

1st row—K.8, turn and p. back.

3rd row—K.16, turn and p. back.

5th row—K.24, turn and p. back.

Continue thus until the row k.24 (32, 40), turn and p. back has been worked. Continue in st. St. inc. 1 st. at beg. of next and every following 4th row (i.e. at longer edge) until sts. number 69 (75, 81). Now work straight until leg measures 8 (81, 9) ins. on the straight and ending with p. row. Inc. 1 st. at each end of needle on next 4 rows. Next row—K. across all sts., cast on 3 sts. 80 (86, 92) sts., p.1 row.

Shape Leg

K. 2 tog. at each end of needle on next and every following 4th row until 52 (54, 56) sts. remain. Work straight until leg measures 21+ (22+, 241) ins. Change to No. 9 needles and work in st. st. until leg measures 23+ (241, 261) ins., measured on the straight. Cast off.

Left Leg

Work as for right leg, but end with k. row before starting back shaping, which will then read 1st row, p.8, turn and k. back.

3rd row—P.16, turn and k. back, etc. Work to correspond with right leg, reversing all shap­ings.

TO MAKE UP

Pin out and press to correct measurements with hot iron and damp cloth. Join front and back seams, using a back stitch seam and flat stitch­ing for ribbing. Join leg seams. Turn in ribbing at waist line and hem down. Insert elastic. Turn under 11 in. at lower edge of leg and slip stitch hem. Turn cuff up on right side and press well. Press crease into trousers for added smartness.
