MATERIALS: Coats & Clark’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 8 ozs. black, 1 oz. each yellow. green. lavender, purple. light orange. dark orange, bright red. light blue. Crochet hook size G. or size required to crochet to gauge.
GAUGE: Each flower motif = approximately 61/2″ across.
DAHLIA MOTIFS: Make 25. Rnds 1 and 2 are always black, Rnds 3 and 4 are first color, Rnd 5 is a second color. With black. ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Rnd I: Ch 1, * 1 sc into ring, ch 1. repeat from * 4 more times. join with sl st to first ch-1-10 sts. Rnd 2: C’h I. * 1 sc in first sc. 2 se into each ip of ch 1. repeat from * around. join with sl st in first ch-1-15 sts. Fasten off. Rnd 3: With first yarn color. ch 1. * 2 sc into first st. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. repeat from * around. join with sl st to first ch-1-20 sts. Rnd 4: Ch 1. 1 sc into first st, ch I, * 1 se into next st, ch I, repeat from * around. join-20 sc and 20 ch-1 sps. Fasten off. Rnd 5: With 2nd yarn color, 1 sc into first Ip of ch 1. * ch 15. 1 sc into next 1p, repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc of rnd-20 loops. Fasten off. Rnd 6: With black yarn, * 1 sc into 8th ch of the 15-ch loop of previous rnd. ch 5. repeat from * around all chains. join with sl st to first sc .of rnd. Fasten off.
FINISHING: With black, sew dahlia motifs tog with small stitch to secure loops of Rnd 6: start with 1 dahlia at center of back, increasing each row by 2 to give a triangular shape-9 motifs in last row.
Edging: Rnd 1: With black, * work 1 sc into 3rd st of any ch-5 along outside edge, ch 5, repeat from * in every ch-5 loop around entire shawl. Rnd 2: Repeat Rnd 1. work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-5 of previous rnd. Fringe: Cut four 15" strands of black for each fringe. Hold strands together and fold in half. Draw folded end through a ch-5 sp on outside edge of shawl, then draw ends through loop: tighten. Repeat in each sp around.
