Diagonal Drop-Stitch Shawl Pattern

Feeling romantic? Designed by Margery Winter, this blue bias-knit shawl is pulled right out of a tender dream.

Instructions are written for one size.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

Approx 23″ x 54″/58.5cm x 137cm

MATERIALS

11 13/4oz/50g balls (each approx 98yds/90m) of Berroco Ultra Silk (silk/ rayon/nylon) in #6106 mint

One pair size 10 (6mm) needles or size to obtain gauge

Cable needle

Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook

GAUGE

19 sts and 28 rows to 4″/10cm over St st using size 10 (6mm) needles.

Take time to check gauge.

STITCH GLOSSARY

6 RC

S1 3 sts to cn and hold to back, k3, k3 from cn.

LT

Knit into the back of 2nd st on needle, leave on LH needle. k into 1st and 2nd sts together, drop off needle.

SHAWL

Cast on 4 sts.

Beg chart-inc slanted edge

Beg with row 1, work 38 rows of chart-40 sts. Cont in pat as established, inc 1 st each side as established until 124 sts (60 inc’s total each side), working inc sts in pat.

Straight section

Note Read section before beg to knit. When a purl st is the 2nd to last st on a RS row, drop the st and k last st instead of k2tog at end.

Next row (RS) K1, M1, work in pat to last 2 sts, k2tog. Work 1 row even. Work last 2 rows until 14 LT cables have been worked.

Dec slanted edge

Note Read section before beg to knit. When a purl st is the 2nd st on needle on a RS row. k 1 , drop the p st instead of ssk; and when a purl st is the 2nd to the last st on RS row, drop the p st. k1 instead of k2tog.

Next row (RS) Ssk, work in pat to last 2 sts. k2tog. Work 1 row even. Work last 2 rows until 4 sts rem.

Bind off dropping any remaining p sts. Be sure that all p sts are completely unraveled.

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements. Work 1 row of sc around entire edge of shawl.
