Seashell Cardi Knit Pattern

The body of this merino wool shrug is worked in one piece, but the real magic lies in its shaping. Figuring out how to put on the piece for the first time may be a bit of a puzzler, but once you slip into its cozy contours,you’ll love the snug, slimming fit.

1862 (2058) yd [1653 (1827)m] / 19 (21) balls Karabella Aurora 8 (100% extra fine merino wool, each approximately PA oz [50g] and 98 yd [90m]), in color #35 Pale Gray, medium/ worsted weight

1 Pair size 7 [4.5mm] needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

1 Size 7 [4.5mm] circular needle, 40″ [101.5cm] long

Stitch markers

Gauge

26 stitches and 28 rows = 4″ [10cm] over slightly stretched 2×2 Rib (page 134) using size 7 [4.5mm] needles

Sleeve (Make 2)

With straight needles, cast on 78 (82) stitches.

Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end.

Row 2: P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 181/2″ [47cm] from the cast-on edge.

Shape Front

Place marker to indicate beginning of RS row. Work in established pattern with decreases as follows:

Size S/M Only

Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning (after the 1st stitch) of each RS row and at the end (before the last stitch) of each WS row for 52 rows. Omit decrease on Rows 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, and 50-38 stitches.

Size L/XL Only

Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning (after the 1st stitch) of each RS row and at the end of each WS row (before the last stitch) for 60 rows. Omit decrease on Rows 2, 4, 8, 10, 14, 16, 20, 22,26, 28, 32, 36, 38, 40, 44, 48, 52, 54, 58, and 60-42 stitches.

For All Sizes

Work even for 41/2 (51/2)” [11 (14)cm] from last decrease row. Work in established pattern with increases as follows:

Size S/M Only

Increase 1 stitch at the beginning (after the 1st stitch) of each RS row and at the end (before the last stitch) of each WS row for 52 rows. Omit increase on Rows 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, and 50-78 stitches.

Size L/XL Only

Increase 1 stitch at the beginning (after the 1st stitch) of each RS row and at the end (before the last stitch) of each WS row for 60 rows. Omit increase on Rows 2, 4, 8, 10, 14, 16, 20, 22,26, 28, 32, 36, 38, 40, 44, 48, 52, 54, 58, and 60-82 stitches.

For All Sizes

Bind off all remaining stitches. Sew Sleeve seams.

Body

Note: The Body is worked in the round as one piece. Place markers exactly as indicated below to guarantee that the finished garment has a symmetrical look.

With WS of the shrug facing, place 8 markers around the opening, beginning as follows:

1st marker. In the middle of Back neck, between the 2 Sleeves.

2nd marker. In the middle of Right Front raglan line.

3rd marker In the middle of Left Front raglan line. 4th marker. At the end of seam of Right Sleeve (beginning of Right Front raglan).

5th marker. At the end of seam of Left Sleeve (beginning of Left Front raglan).

6th marker. In the middle of lower Back.

7th marker. Centered between the 4th and 6th markers.

8th marker: Centered between the 5th and 6th markers.

With RS facing and circular needle, starting at 4th marker, pick up and knit 32 (36) stitches between each marker-256 (288) stitches. Join in the round, place marker on the needle to indicate beginning of rounds.

Round 1: Place marker, k2, place marker, M1, [k2, p2) 7 (8) times, k2, [M1, place marker, p2, place marker, M1, (k2, p2) 7 (8) times, k2) 3 times, (M1, place marker, k2, place marker, M1, (k2, p2) 7 (8) times, k2) 4 times, M1-272 (304) stitches. Slipping markers every round, work as follows:

Rounds 2-4: Work stitches as they appear, purling all added stitches.

Round 5: Slip marker, k2, slip marker, M1, pl, [k2, p2] 7 (8) times, k2, [p1, M1, slip marker, p2, slip marker, M1, p1, (k2, p2) 7 (8) times, k2) 3 times, (p1, M1, slip marker, k2, slip marker, M1, pl, (k2, p2) 7 (8) times, k21, 4 times, p1, M1-288 (320) stitches.

Rounds 6-8: Work Rounds 2-4.
