Plush chenille ridges create a striking surface design on Patricia Brown's crimson pullover and cap set. A flattering funnel neck and knuckle-brushing sleeves add to the lean silhouette. Shown in size Small. The Chenille Pullover and Cap first appeared in the Fall '94 issue of Vogue Knitting.

Original Yarn

Pullover:

- 4 (4, 5) 1.75oz/50g balls (each approx 165yd/150m) of Trendsetter Cashmore (wool/microfiber 3) in #915 wine (A)

- 11 (11, 12) 1.75oz/50g balls (each approx 66yd/60m) of Trendsetter Canyon (rayon wool/acrylic 5) in #3396 burgundy (MC)

- One each size 7 (4.5mm) circular needle, 24"/60cm and 16"/40cm, OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

- Stitch markers

Hat:

- 1 ball Trendsetter's Cashmore in #915 (A)

- 1 ball Trendsetter's Canyon in #3396 burgundy (MC)

- Size 7 circular needle, 16"/40cm

Substitute Yarn

Pullover:

- 5 (5, 6) 3.5oz/100g balls (each approx 151yd/140m) of Rowan Yarns Chunky Cotton Chenille (cotton 5) in #38 red (A)

- 5 (5, 6) 3.5oz/100g balls (each approx 151yd/140m) of Magpie Aran (wool 5) in #319 red (MC)

Hat:

- 1 ball Rowan Yarns Chunky Cotton Chenille in #38 red (A)

- 1 ball Magpie Aran in #319 red (MC)

Both:

- One set of four size 7 (4.5mm) double pointed needles (dpn)

Note: The original yarn used for this sweater is no longer available. A comparable substitute has been made. Check gauge of substitute yarns very carefully before beginning.

GAUGE

Pullover and hat: 15 sts to 4"/10cm and 10 rnds to 1.75"/4.5cm over St st knit circularly using MC and size 7 (4.5mm) needles. To work gauge swatch: Cast on 30 sts evenly divided over 3 dpn. K 20 rnds. FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

PULLOVER

Note: 1 Body and sleeves are each knit circularly to underarm, then joined to circularly knit yoke. 2 Use 2 strands A held tog. 3 Keep careful count of rnds.

BODY

With MC and longer circular needle, cast on 144 (156, 172) sts. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in rnds as foll: ***With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 8 (10, 10) rnds. With A, k 4 rnds A. **With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 9 (10, 11) rnds. With A, k 4 rnds. Rep from * once. "With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 8 (9, 10) rnds. With A, k 4 rnds. Rep from ** once. With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 8 (8, 9) rnds. With A, k 4 rnds. With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 8 (8, 9) rnds. With A, k 2 rnds, ending at joining marker.*** Mark st immediately after joining marker. Sl all sts to spare needle or holders.

SLEEVES

Note: Change to shorter circular needles when possible. With MC, cast on 35 (37, 39) sts divided evenly on 3 dpn. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work pat and incs simultaneously as foll: Work in rnds as for body between ***'s, AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st at marker every 7th rnd 0 (4, 14) times, every 8th rnd 4 (8, 0) times, every 9th rnd 6 (0, 0) times—45 (49, 53) sts. Sl sts to holder or spare needle.

YOKE

Note: 1 Read through instructions as pat and decs are worked simultaneously. 2 Work decs by k2tog before markers and ssk after markers. Joining rnd: With RS facing, longer circular needle and A, beg with marked st on body and k1, place marker (pm), k70 (76, 84) sts from body (back), pm, k1 from body, pm, k45 (49, 53) sts of 1 sleeve, pm, k1 from body, pm, k70 (76, 84) sts from body (front), pm, k last st from body, pm, k45 (49, 53) sts of 2nd sleeve, pm, and join—234 (254, 278) sts. Working single st between markers as a knit st every rnd, work pat and decs simultaneously as foll: K 1 rnd A; k 1 rnd MC, p 7 (8, 8) rnds MC; k 3 (4, 4) rnds A; k 1 rnd MC, p 7 (7, 8) rnds MC; k 3 rnds A; k 1 rnd MC, p 7 rnds MC; k 3 rnds A; k 1 rnd MC, p 6 (6, 7) rnds MC; k 3 rnds A; k 1 rnd MC, p 5 (6, 6) rnds MC. AT SAME TIME, on front and back, dec 1 st each side at markers every rnd 2 (3, 7) times, every other rnd 24 (25, 24) times; on sleeves, dec 1 st each side at markers every other rnd 1 (4, 8) times, every 3rd rnd 16 (15, 13) times—62 (66, 70) sts.

Funnel neck

With A, k 3 rnds. With MC, k 1 rnd, then p 4 (5, 5) rnds. With A, k 2 rnds. With MC, k 1 rnd, p 4 rnds. With A, k 2 rnds. With MC, k 1 rnd, p 3 rnds. Bind off loosely purlwise.

HAT

Notes: 1 Use 2 strands of A held tog. 2 Change to dpn when necessary. With shorter circular needle and MC, cast on 72 sts. Place marker and join, taking care not to twist sts. Rnd 1 Knit. Rep rnd 1 for 1"/2.5cm. P 8 rnds. Next rnd With A, [k16, k2tog] 4 times—68 sts. K 3 rnds. With MC, p 6 rnds. With A, k 1 rnd. Next rnd With A, [k15, k2tog] 4 times—64 sts. Next rnd [k14, k2tog] 4 times—60 sts. Next rnd [K13, k2tog] 4 times—56 sts. Next rnd With MC, [p12, p2tog] 4 times—52 sts. In same way, cont to dec 4 sts on next 5 rnds—32 sts. Change to A.
