TERRIFIC TEXTURE

Duplicate-stitched diamonds and big bobbles lend a lighthearted feel to Gitta Schrade's funnelneck pullover. Knit with two strands of yarn held together, it whips up in a flash. Shown in size Medium. The Funnelneck Pullover first appeared in the Winter '00/'01 issue of Vogue Knitting.

MATERIALS

- 5 (5, 5, 6, 6) 8.75oz/250g hanks (each approx 310yd/284m) of Wool Pak Yarn NZ/Baabajoes Wool Co. 14-Ply (wool 5) in #17 sky blue (A)

- 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) hanks in #01 natural (B)

- One pair each sizes 10 and 10.5 (6 and 6.5mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

- Size J/9 (6mm) crochet hook

- Stitch holders

- One 1"/25mm button

GAUGE

11 sts and 15 rows = 4"/10cm over St st using larger needles and 2 strands of yarn. FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Note: Work with 2 strands of A held tog throughout. Foll charts for duplicate sts in B and work crochet bobbles after pieces are knit.

BACK

With smaller needles and 2 strands of A held tog, cast on 53 (55, 59, 63, 69) sts. K 3 rows. Change to larger needles and cont in St st until piece measures 4.75 (5.25, 5.25, 5.75, 6.25)"/12 (14, 14, 14.5, 16)cm from beg. Dec 1 st each side of next row then every 6th row 3 times more—45 (47, 51, 55, 61) sts. Work even for 4 rows. Inc 1 st each side of next row then every 4th row twice more—51 (53, 57, 61, 67) sts. Work even until piece measures 15.5 (16, 15.5, 15.5, 16)"/39.5 (40.5, 39.5, 39.5, 40.5)cm from beg.

Armhole shaping

Bind off 2 (2, 2, 3, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) times, then every 4th row twice—41 (43, 45, 47, 49) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8 (8, 8.5, 9, 9)"/20.5 (20.5, 21.5, 23, 23)cm.

Neck and shoulder shaping

Bind off 10 (10, 11, 12, 13) sts at beg of next 2 rows for shoulders. Sl center 21 (23, 23, 23, 23) sts to a holder for neck.

FRONT

Work as for back.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles and 2 strands of A held tog, cast on 25 (25, 27, 27, 29) sts. K 3 rows. Change to larger needles and cont in St st, inc 1 st each side every 10th row 5 (5, 5, 6, 6) times—35 (35, 37, 39, 41) sts. Work even until piece measures 17.5"/44.5cm from beg.

Cap shaping

Bind off 2 (2, 2, 3, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 6 (6, 7, 6, 6) times, every 4th row 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) times. Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off rem 11 sts.

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements. Sew left shoulder seams.

Collar

With smaller needles and 2 strands of A held tog, cast on 4 sts, then k sts from front and back shoulders—46 (50, 50, 50, 50) sts. Cont in St st for 2"/5cm. Next row (RS) K to last 4 sts, bind off 2 sts (buttonhole), k to end. P 1 row, casting on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row. K 1 row, p 1 row, then p 2 rows. Bind off purlwise. Sew other shoulder seam. Sew on buttons. Centering chart as in photo and beg at lower front edge, with 2 strands of B, work duplicate st (each duplicate st covers 2 rows) over entire front. Rep for back. Work chart on sleeves in same way.

Bobbles

Working in center of front diamonds only, work as foll: with double strand of B, [insert crochet hook from side under center st, pull yarn through, yo] 4 times, pull last yo through all lps on hook, ch 1 to secure. Pull ends to WS and knot in place. Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams.
