HORSESHOE CABLE PULLOVER

Chic and sophisticated, Margaret Bruzelius's oversized rib-and-cable patterned pullover in hazy mohair embraces maximum comfort and unbeatable charm. Shown in size 36. The Horseshoe Cable Pullover first appeared in the Fall/Winter '87 issue of Vogue Knitting.

SIZES

To fit 30-32 (34, 36, 38, 40)"/76-81 (86, 91, 96, 101)cm bust. Directions are for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one set of figures it applies to all sizes.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

- Sleeve width at upper arm 19 (20, 20, 21, 22)"/48 (51, 51, 53, 56)cm

MATERIALS

Original Yarn: 15 (16, 17, 18, 20) 1.75oz/50g balls of Vendome Maurice (silk/mohair/wool) in #1000 yellow.

Substitute Yarn: 7 (8, 8, 8, 9) 1.75oz/50g balls of Rowan Yarns Kid Soft (merino/mohair/nylon) in #758 lt. green.

- One pair each sizes 9 and 10 (5.5 and 6mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

- Cable needle (cn).

GAUGE

- 13 sts and 20 rows to 4"/10cm over St st using size 10 (6mm) needles.

- 20 sts and 20 rows to 4"/10cm over rib horseshoe cable using size 10 (6mm) needles.

FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGES.

STITCH GLOSSARY

Right Cross (over 8 sts): Sl next 4 sts to cn and hold to back, k1, p2, k1; then k1, p2, k1 from cn.

Left Cross (over 8 sts): Sl next 4 sts to cn and hold to front, k1, p2, k1; then k1, p2, k1 from cn.

Rib Horseshoe Cable (20 sts):

Row 1 (RS): P2, k1, [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, k1, p2.

Row 2 and all WS rows: K2, p1, k2, [p2, k2] 3 times, p1, k2. (K the knit sts and p the purl sts).

Row 3: P2, right cross over 8 sts, left cross over 8 sts, p2.

Rows 5, 7 and 9: Rep row 1.

Row 10: Rep row 2. Rep rows 1-10 for rib horseshoe cable.

BACK

With smaller needles, cast on 80 (84, 92, 96, 100) sts.

Beg rib pat: Row 1 (RS) K5 (6, 8, 9, 10), [p2, k1, (p2, k2) 3 times, p2, k1, p2, k5 (6, 8, 9, 10)] 3 times. Rep rows 1 and 2 for 1"/2.5cm, end with a row 2. Change to larger needles Beg St st and cable pat; Row 1 (RS) K5 (6, 8, 9, 10), [work row 1 of cable over 20 sts, k5 (6, 8, 9, 10)] 3 times. Cont in St st and cable pat until piece measures 11 (11.5, 12, 12.5, 13)"/28 (29, 30.5, 32, 33)cm from beg.

Armhole shaping

Bind off 3 (3, 4, 4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows—74 (78, 84, 88, 92) sts. Cont in pats, until armhole measures 9.5 (10, 10, 10.5, 11)"/24 (25.5, 25.5, 26.5, 28)cm.

Shoulder shaping

Bind off 11 (11, 12, 12, 13) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 11 (12, 12, 13, 13) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

High neck

Cont in pat on 30 (32, 36, 38, 40) sts until high neck measures 4"/10cm from last shoulder bind-off. Bind off all sts loosely.

FRONT

Work as for back.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles, cast on 45 (45, 46, 46, 46) sts.

Beg rib pat: Row 1 (RS) P2, k1, [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, k1, p2, k5 (5, 6, 6, 6), p2, k1, [p2, k2] 3 times, p2, k1, p2. Row 2 K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep rows 1 and 2 for 1"/2.5cm, end with a row 2. Change to larger needles. Beg St st and cable pat: Row 1 (RS) Work row 1 of cable over 20 sts, k5 (5, 6, 6, 6), work row 1 of cable over 20 sts. Cont in St st and cable pat, AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st each end (working inc sts into St st) every 4th row 8 (13, 9, 13, 18) times, then every 6th row 7 (4, 7, 5, 2) times—75 (79, 78, 82, 86) sts. Work even until piece measures 17 (17.5, 18, 18.5, 19)"/43 (44, 45, 47, 48)cm from beg, end with a WS row. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING

Block pieces. Sew shoulder seams and sides of high neck. Sew top of sleeve to straight edge of armhole, then sew last 1.25"/3cm of sleeve to bound-off sts of front and back armhole. Sew side and sleeve seams.
