Back
Using larger needles and MC, cast on 82 (86, 90, 94, 98). Knit 7 rows. Change to stockinette stitch. Work until piece measures 6 (6, 6.5, 6.5, 7)" end with a RS row.
Shape sides
Set-up row (WS) P23, place marker (pm), p36 (40, 44, 48, 52), pm, purl to end. [Work to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, k36 (40, 44, 48, 52), SSK, knit to end, work 7 (7, 9, 9, 9) rows] 8 (8, 8, 7, 7) times — 66 (70, 74, 80, 84) stitches. Work even until piece measures 20 (20.5, 21, 21.5, 22)", end with a WS row.
Shape armholes
At beginning of every row, bind off 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) twice. Dec 1 each side every RS row 5 times — 46 (48, 52, 56, 60) stitches. Work even until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10)", end with a WS row. Place stitches on hold.
Left Front
Using larger needles and MC, cast on 42 (44, 48, 52, 56). Work as for Back to beginning of side shaping.
Shape side
Set-up row (WS) P19 (21, 25, 29, 33), pm, purl to end. [Work to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, knit to end, work 7 (7, 9, 9, 9) rows] 8 (8, 8, 7, 7) times — 34 (36, 40, 45, 49) stitches. Work even until piece measures same length as Back to armhole.
Shape armhole
Shape armhole at beginning of RS rows as for Back — 24 (25, 29, 33, 37) stitches. Work even until armhole measures 4 (4.5, 4, 4.5, 4.5)", end with a RS row.
Shape front neck
At beginning of every WS row, bind off 6 (7, 8, 8, 8), then 0 (0, 0, 3, 4). Dec 1 at end of every RS row 6 (5, 6, 5, 6) times — 12 (13, 15, 17, 19) stitches. Work even until armhole measures same length as Back to shoulder. Place stitches on hold.
Right Front
Work as for Left Front, EXCEPT reverse shaping. Set-up row (WS) P21, pm purl to end. Shape side by decreasing after marker. Bind off for armhole at beginning of WS rows and decrease at end of RS rows. Shape neck at beginning of RS rows. Place stitches on hold.
Sleeves
Using larger needles and MC, cast on 34 (36, 38, 40, 40). Knit 7 rows. Change to stockinette stitch and work 12 (10, 10, 14, 14) rows, end with a WS row. [Inc 1 each side on next row, work 9 (7, 7, 5, 5) rows] 6 (8, 8, 9, 9) times — 46 (52, 54, 58, 58) stitches. Work even until piece measures 16 (16, 16.5, 16.5, 16.5)", end with a WS row.
Shape cap
At beginning of every row, bind off 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) twice. Dec 1 each side every RS row 8 (7, 8, 7, 5) times, then every 4 rows 3 (4, 4, 5, 7) times — 14 (18, 18, 20, 20) stitches. Bind off.
Finishing
Block pieces. With RS together and using smaller needle and MC, join shoulders using 3-needle bind-off as follows: Join 12 (13, 15, 17, 19) stitches of first shoulder; bind off Back neck stitches until 12 (13, 15, 17, 19) stitches remain; join second shoulder.
Button band
With RS facing, smaller needle, and MC, pick up and knit (PUK) 2 stitches for every 3 rows along left front edge. Knit 7 rows. Bind off.
Buttonhole band
PUK as for button band along right front edge. Next row: Buttonhole row (WS) K4, yo, k2tog, k11, yo, k2tog, knit to end. Knit 6 rows. Bind off.
Collar stand
With RS facing, smaller needle, MC, and beginning at right front neck edge, PUK 18 (19, 23, 26, 29) along right front neck, 22 (22, 22, 22, 24) across back neck, and 18 (19, 23, 26, 29) down left front neck — 58 (60, 68, 74, 80) stitches. Begin short rows (WS) K40 (41, 46, 50, 54), wrap and turn (W&T), k22 (22, 24, 26, 28), W&T, k24 (24, 26, 28, 30), W&T, k26 (26, 28, 30, 32), W&T, k29 (29, 31, 33, 35), W&T, k32 (32, 34, 36, 38), W&T, k37 (37, 39, 41, 43), W&T, K42 (42, 44, 46, 48), W&T, knit to end of row. At beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 6). Cut yarn.
Collar
With inside of collar stand facing, knit across with CC. Next row Knit. Next row Purl. Continuing in stockinette as established, Inc 1 each side every RS row 5 times. Next row Purl. Next row Bind off.
Fold-up Cuffs
With WS facing, PUK 1 for every cast-on stitch. Work in reverse stockinette for a total of 12 rows. Bind off.
Set in sleeves. Sew side, sleeve, and cuff seams, reversing seaming at cuff. Fold up cuffs. Sew on 2 buttons.
