Mohair Basketwave Pullover Free Knit Pattern
Free knitting pattern for the Mohair Basketweave Pullover by Deborah Newton. A chunky, billowy soft mohair sweater featuring a classic dropped-shoulder silhouette and a rich basketweave texture. Originally featured in Vogue Knitting Winter '94.
MOHAIR BASKETWEAVE PULLOVER
SIZES
To fit Small (Medium, Large). Directions are for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one figure it applies to all sizes.
KNITTED MEASUREMENTS
- Bust 43 (46, 50)"/106.5 (117, 127)cm
- Length 19 (20, 21)"/48 (51, 53.5)cm
- Sleeve width at upper arm 18 (18.5, 20)"/46 (47, 51)cm
GAUGE
12 sts and 18 rows to 4"/10cm over basketweave pat using size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles. FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
Note: Work with 2 strands held tog.

Rib pat (multiple of 6 sts)
Row 1 (WS) P2, k2, *p4, k2; rep from *, end p2.
Row 2 (RS) K2, p2, *k4, p2; rep from *, end k2.
Rep rows 1-2 for rib pat.
Basketweave pat (multiple of 6 sts + 2 extra)
Rows 1 and 7 (RS) Knit Rows 2 and 8 (WS) Purl.
Rows 3 and 5 (RS) K2, *p4, k2; rep from *.
Rows 4 and 6 (WS) P2, *k4, p2; rep from *.
Rows 9 and 11 (RS) P3, k2, p4; rep from *, end p3.
Rows 10 and 12 (WS) K3, *p2, k4; rep from *, end k3.
Rep rows 1-12 for basketweave pat.
BACK
Cast on 66 (72, 78) sts. Work even in rib pat for 8"/20.5cm, end with a RS row.
Next row (WS) P2tog, work rib pat to last 2 sts, p2tog—64 (70, 76) sts.
Beg basketweave pat: Next row (RS) K1 (selvage), work row 1 of basketweave pat over next 62 (68, 74) sts, end k1 (selvage). Work even in pat as established, keeping selvage sts in St st, until piece measures 18 (19, 20)"/45.5 (48, 51)cm from beg, end with a WS row.
Neck and shoulder shaping
Cont in pat, bind off 7 (8, 8) sts at beg of next 4 rows, 7 (7, 9) sts at beg of next 2 rows, AT SAME TIME, bind off center 10 (12, 14) sts, and working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 3 sts twice.
FRONT
Work as for back until piece measures 17 (18, 19)"/43 (45.5, 48)cm from beg, end with a WS row.
Neck shaping
Next row (RS) Cont in pat, work 27 (29, 31) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off next 10 (12, 14) sts, work to end. Working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 2 sts 3 times—21 (23, 25) sts rem each side, AT SAME TIME, when piece measures same as back to shoulder, shape shoulder as for back.
SLEEVE
Cast on 30 (30, 36) sts. P 1 row. Next row (RS) K2 (selvage sts), work row 1 of basketweave pat over next 26 (26, 32) sts, k2 (selvage sts). Work even in pats as established for 3 more rows, keeping selvage sts in St st. Next (inc) row (RS) K2, m1, work as established to last 2 sts, m1, k2. Keeping selvage sts in St st and working inc sts into basketweave pat, rep inc row every 6th row 9 times, every 4th row 2 (3, 2) times—54 (56, 60) sts. Work even until piece measures approx 19"/48cm from beg, end with row 2 or 8 of basketweave pat. Bind off on next row.
FINISHING
Block pieces by steaming lightly on WS if necessary. Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband
With circular needle, RS facing, beg at right shoulder seam and pick up and knit 60 (66, 72) sts around neck edge. Place marker and join. Rnd 1 *P2, k4; rep from *. Rep rnd 1 until neckband measures 5"/12.5cm. Bind off loosely. Place markers 9 (9.25, 10)"/23 (23.5, 25.5)cm down from shoulders on front and back for armholes. Sew top of sleeves between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
