ROLLED-NECK OPENWORK TOP

Joan Vass's easy-to-knit pullover—highlighted by a compelling openwork pattern, drop shoulders and ribbed finishing—is a breath of fresh air. This exquisite stunner leaves little to be desired. SIZES

To fit Small (Medium, Large, X-Large). Directions are for smallest size with larger size in parentheses. If there is only one figure, it applies to all sizes.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

- Bust 41 (44, 47, 49)"/104 (111.5, 119, 124.5)cm

- Length 19 (19, 19.5, 20)"/48 (48, 49.5, 50.5)cm

- Upper arm 11.5 (11.5, 12.5, 14)"/29 (29, 32, 35.5)cm

MATERIALS

- 9 (9, 10, 11) 1.75oz/50g skeins (each approx 99yd/90m) of Trendsetter Yarns Dolcino (acrylic/polyamide) in #8 moss green

- One pair each sizes 9 and 11 (5.5 and 8mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

- Size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle, 16"/40cm long

- Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook

GAUGE

12 sts and 21 rows = 4"/10cm over openwork pat st using larger needles. FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Note: Body is made in one piece, beg at lower back and worked to neck, then sts are bound off for back neck then cast on for front neck and front is worked to lower edge.

OPENWORK PATTERN STITCH

(multiple of 4 sts plus 2 selvage sts).

Row 1 (RS) K1 (selvage st), *k2, yo twice, k2; rep from *, end k1 (selvage st).

Row 2 K1, *p2tog, work k1, p1 into double yo, p2tog; rep from *, end k1.

Row 3 K1, *yo, k4, yo; rep from *, end k1.

Row 4 K1, *p1, p2tog twice, k1; rep from *, end k1.

Rep rows 1-4 for openwork pat st.

BODY

Beg at lower edge with smaller needles, cast on 59 (63, 67, 71) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1.25"/3cm, inc 3 sts evenly on last WS row—62 (66, 70, 74) sts. Change to larger needles and cont in openwork pat st until piece measures 19 (19, 19.5, 20)"/48 (48, 49.5, 50.5)cm from beg. Next row (RS) Work 19 (21, 23, 25) sts, bind off 24 sts for neck, work to end. Next row (WS) Work in pat casting on 24 sts over bound-off sts of previous row. Cont in pat st on all sts until piece measures 17.75 (17.75, 18.25, 18.75)"/45 (45, 46.5, 47.5)cm from front neck (same number of rows as back to ribbed edge). Change to smaller needles and k1, p1 rib, dec 3 sts on next row and cont in k1, p1 rib for 1.25"/3cm. Bind off in rib.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles, cast on 33 (33, 35, 39) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1.25"/3cm inc 1 (1, 3, 3) sts on last WS row—34 (34, 38, 42) sts. Change to larger needle and work in openwork pat st until piece measures 16.5"/42cm from beg. Bind off loosely in pat.

FINISHING

Do not steam block pieces. Pin pieces to measurements and mist lightly and allow to dry.

Neckband

With circular needle, pick up and k 60 sts evenly around neck. Work in St st (k every rnd) for 2"/5cm. Bind off. Roll neckband to outside. Place markers at 6 (6, 6.5, 7.25)"/15 (15, 16.5, 18.5)cm down from shoulders. With crochet hook, sl st sleeves to armhole between markers from WS. Sl st side seams and sleeve seams tog from WS.
