Free knitting pattern for the Snowflake Pullover, a very easy and stylish oversized winter sweater featuring a classic snowflake motif. Designed for bulky yarn with large needles for a quick project.

SIZES

To fit Small (Medium, Large). Directions are for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one figure, it applies to all sizes.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS

- Bust at underarm 45 (49, 55)"/114.5 (124.5, 139.5)cm

- Length 27 (28, 29)"/68.5 (71, 74)cm

- Sleeve width at upper arm 19 (20, 21)"/48.5 (51, 53)cm

MATERIALS

Original Yarn: 9 (9, 10) 3.5oz/100g balls (each approx 55yd/50m) of Adrienne Vittadini Fabianna (wool 6) in #80 ecru (A); 4 balls in #53 brown (B).

Substitute Yarn: 6 (6, 7) 3.5oz/100g balls (each approx 93yd/85m) of Reynolds/JCA Allagash (wool 6) in #657 cream (A); 3 balls in #655 toast (B).

One pair size 15 (10mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Size 11 (8mm) circular needle, 16"/40cm.

Stitch markers.

Note: The original yarn used for this sweater is no longer available. A comparable substitute has been made. Check gauge of substitute yarns very carefully before beginning.

GAUGE

8 sts and 12 rows to 4"/10cm over St st using size 15 (10mm) needles. FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

STITCH GLOSSARY

Rib pat (multiple of 6 sts plus 1 extra)

Row 1 (WS) K2, p3, *k3, p3; rep from *, end k2.

Row 2 (RS) Knit. Rep rows 1-2 for rib pat.

Stripe pat in St st (k on RS, p on WS), work *2 rows B, 6 rows A; rep from * for stripe pat.

BACK

With larger needles and A, cast on 43 (49, 55) sts. Work 7 rows in rib pat and for size small only, inc 2 sts across last row—45 (49, 55) sts. Cont to work first and last 2 sts in garter st (k every row), beg with a k row and B and work 8 rows in stripe pat. Cont to work first and last 2 sts in garter st and work 2 rows more in stripe pat. Discontinue working 2 sts at each edge in garter st. Beg chart: Row 1 (RS) Cont in St st and beg as indicated, work to rep, work 16-st rep twice, end as indicated. Work through chart row 21 as established. Change to B and p 1 row, then k 1 row. Cont in stripe pat as established until piece measures 17 (17.5, 18)"/43.5 (44.5, 46)cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Armhole shaping

Cont in pat, bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows—37 (41, 47) sts. Work even until armhole measures 9.5 (10, 10.5)"/24.5 (25.5, 27)cm, end with a WS row.

Shoulder shaping

Bind off 10 (11, 14) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off rem 17 (19, 19) sts.

FRONT

Work as for back until armhole measures 8.5 (9, 9.5)"/21.5 (23, 24.5)cm, end with a WS row.

Neck shaping

Next row (RS) Work 15 (16, 19) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off 7 (9, 9) sts, work to end. Working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 3 sts once, 2 sts once. Work even and when armhole measures same as back to shoulder, bind off rem 10 (11, 14) sts each side.

SLEEVES

With larger needles and A, cast on 25 sts. Work 7 rows in rib pat, inc 1 st on last row—26 sts. Beg with a k row and B, work in stripe pat, AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st each side (working inc sts into stripe pat) every 4th row 0 (0, 3) times, every 6th row 5 (7, 5) times, every 8th row 1 (0, 0) times—38 (40, 42) sts. Work even until piece measures 17 (17.5, 18)"/43.5 (44.5, 46)cm from beg. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING

Sew both shoulder seams.

Highneck

With RS facing, circular needle and A, pick up and k36 (42, 42) sts evenly around neck edge. Place marker, join and work in rnds as foll: Rnd 1 *P3, k3; rep from *. Rnd 2 Knit. Rep rnds 1-2 until highneck measures 2.5"/6.5cm from beg. Bind off loosely in pat. Sew straight edge of sleeves to armhole. Sew bound-off body sts to side edges of sleeves. Leaving garter st at lower edges open, sew side and sleeve seams.
