Free knitting pattern for the Rosita Stylish Jacket designed by Wilma Peers. This intermediate-level cardigan features colorful Missoni-inspired stripes, steeking techniques for armholes and necklines, and professional finishing with crochet reinforcement.

Multicolor stripes pay homage to Missoni. The black-and-white patterned stripes add graphic appeal to this steeked knit with classic lines.

NOTES

Cardigan body is worked in the round using steeks at front, armholes, and neck. Stitches are bound off for armholes and neck, then on next round steek stitches are cast on above bound-off stitches.

Sleeves are worked in the round, casting on steek stitches at beginning of cap shaping.

Work steeks in stockinette, knitting first and last stitch through the back loop, and working in Steek chart during chart rounds.

DEC 2: Before and after steek K2tog, k1, k3 steek stitches, k1, SSK.

INC 2: At beginning and end of round K1, M1, work to last stitch, M1, k1.

STRIPE PATTERN

Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC. Work Chart A. Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC. Work Chart B. Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC. Work Chart C. Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC. Work Chart D. Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC. Work Chart E. Continue knitting with MC.

BODY

With MC, cast on 176 (196, 212, 232, 248), place marker for steek (pm), cast on 3 for steek — 179 (199, 215, 235, 251) stitches. Pm for beginning of round and join, being careful not to twist stitches. Work in Stripe Pattern through Chart C, working steek stitches in Steek Chart during chart rounds. With MC, knit 15 rounds. Piece measures approximately 13.5 (14, 14.5, 15, 15.5)".

STEEK AND SHAPE ARMHOLE

K42 (46, 49, 53, 56) for Right Front, bind off 4 (6, 8, 10, 12) for armhole, knit until there are 84 (92, 98, 106, 112) on needle for Back after bind-off, bind off 4 (6, 8, 10, 12) for armhole, knit to end. Next round [Knit to bound-off stitches at armhole, pm, cast on 3 for steek, pm] twice, knit to end — 177 (193, 205, 221, 233) stitches. Continue in Stripe Pattern and AT SAME TIME, Dec 2 at each armhole steek this round, then every other round 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) times — 161 (173, 185, 197, 209) stitches: 38 (41, 44, 47, 50) for each front, 76 (82, 88, 94, 100) for Back, and 3 sets of 3 steek stitches. Work even in pattern through Chart E. With MC, knit 3 rounds, end last round 10 stitches before front steek marker.

STEEK AND SHAPE NECK

Bind off 10 Left Front stitches, 3 steek stitches, and 10 Right Front stitches — 23 stitches bound off. Next round Knit to bound-off stitches, pm, cast on 3 for steek, pm for beginning of round. Continue in pattern and AT SAME TIME, Dec 2 at front steek every other round 7 (8, 9, 9, 10) times — 127 (137, 147, 159, 169) stitches: 21 (23, 25, 28, 30) for each front, 76 (82, 88, 94, 100) for Back, and 3 sets of 3 steek stitches. Work even with MC until armhole measures 8.5 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10)", end at left armhole steek.

JOIN SHOULDERS

Next round With a spare needle, bind off 3 armhole steek stitches; knit to front steek, bind off 3; knit to right armhole steek, bind off 3. Back and Front stitches are now divided onto 2 needles. Turn piece inside out with RS together. Join shoulders using 3-needle bind-off as follows: Join 21 (23, 25, 28, 30) stitches of first shoulder; bind off back neck stitches until 21 (23, 25, 28, 30) stitches remain; join second shoulder.

SLEEVES

With MC, cast on 44 (44, 48, 48, 50), pm for beginning of round and join. Inc 2 every 8 rounds 7 (9, 9, 14, 15) times, then every 10 rounds 3 (3, 3, 0, 0) times and AT SAME TIME, work in pattern as follows: Knit 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) rounds with MC; work Chart F; work in Stripe Pattern — 64 (68, 72, 76, 80) stitches. Work even in pattern through Chart C. With MC, knit 15 rounds, end last round 2 (3, 4, 5, 6) stitches before marker. Piece measures approximately 17.5 (18, 18.5, 19, 20)".

STEEK AND SHAPE CAP

Bind off 4 (6, 8, 10, 12) stitches removing marker, work to end, pm, cast on 3 for steek, pm for beginning of round — 63 (65, 67, 69, 71) stitches. Continue in Stripe Pattern and AT SAME TIME, Dec 2 at cap steek every other round 17 (18, 19, 20, 21) times — 29 stitches. Work 1 (3, 5, 7, 9) rounds even, end last round 3 stitches before steek marker. Bind off 3 cap stitches, 3 steek stitches, and 3 cap stitches — 9 stitches bound off. Next round Knit to bound-off stitches, pm, cast on 3 for steek, pm for beginning of round. Next round Knit to 5 stitches before steek marker, bind off 5 cap stitches, 3 steek stitches, and 5 cap stitches — 13 stitches bound off. Next round Knit to bound-off stitches; turn. Bind off remaining 10 stitches.

FINISHING

With RS facing, crochet hook and MC, finish crochet-and-cut steeks along front and neck opening, armholes, and cap shapings.

Bottom band: PUK along lower edge. Work 7 rows of Chart G. With CC1, bind off. Fold to inside and sew to pick-up row.

Neckband: PUK around neck edge. Continue as for bottom band.

Button band: PUK along left front edge, bottom band, and neckband. Continue as for bottom band.

Buttonhole band: PUK along right front edge, bottom band, and neckband. Continue as for button band EXCEPT work buttonholes as follows: at each chart band, [PUK 1, bind off 1] twice — 2 stitches bound off. Next row Cast on 2 over each set of bound-off stitches.

Sleeve band: PUK around sleeve edge. Continue as for bottom band EXCEPT work Chart G in rounds.

Set in sleeves, matching chart bands.

KNIT WISE: USING STEEKS

Work a slip-stitch crochet chain from the bottom of the cardigan up to the shoulder, working to the left of the center steek stitch, continuing along neck shaping to shoulder. Cut yarn. Repeat, working to the right of the center steek stitch. Repeat along armhole steeks. After crochet reinforcement has been worked on all steeks, carefully cut through the knitted ladders of the center stitch from the bottom of the steeks to the top. Fold steeks to inside and tack down.
