TENSION

The tension for this design is 12 stitches to 2 inches (5cm). Check your tension — if less stitches use a finer needle, if more use a coarser needle.

THE BACK

Using No. 31/4mm needles cast on 96 [104 : 108: 116: 120] sts.

1st Row.- S1, k2, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, k1.

2nd Row. – S1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows 12 times.

Change to No. 4mm needles and rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 131/2 [131/2 : 131/2 : 13 : 131in or 34 [34 : 34 : 33 : 331cm (when stretched to correct width), ending on wrong side.

Shape Armholes

Cast off 6 sts in patt at beg of next 2 rows. Work 6 [8 : 10 : 12 : 14] rows in patt dec once at each end of every row. 72 [76 : 76 : 80 :80] sts.

Cont in patt until armholes measure 2 [2 : 2 : 21/2 : 21/21in or 5 [5 : 5 : 6 : 6]cm, ending on wrong side. **

Proceed in st-st until armholes measure 71/2 [71/2 : 71/2 : 8 : 8lin or 19 [19 : 19 : 20 : 20]cm, ending on wrong side.

Shape Shoulders

Cast off 8 [8 : 8 : 9 : 9] sts at beg of next 4 [2 : 2 : 4 : 4] rows.

Cast off 8 [9 : 9 : 10 : 10] sts at beg of next 2 [4 : 4 : 2 : 2] rows.

Break off yarn, leave rem 24 sts on a thread.

THE FRONT

Work exactly as given for The Back until ** is reached.

Proceed in st-st until armholes measure 41/2 [41/2 : 41/2 : 5 : 51in or 11 [11 : 11 : 13 : 131cm, ending on wrong side.

Shape Neck

Next Row.- S1, k27 [29 : 29 : 31 : 31], turn.

Working on these 28 [30 : 30 : 32 : 32] sts only proceed as follows:

Next Row.- S1, purl to last st, k1.

Work 4 rows dec once at neck edge in every row. 24 [26 : 26 : 28 : 28] sts.

Cont without shaping until armhole measures same as The Back, ending on wrong side.

Shape Shoulder

Rolm. -Cast oll S 48 S to end

Next Row. – Cast off 8 [9 : 9 : 9 : 9] sts, knit to end.

Next Row.- S1, purl to end.

Cast off rem 8 [9 : 9 : 10 : 10] sts.

With right side facing, slip first 16 sts of rem 44 [46 : 46 : 48 : 48] sts onto a thread, rejoin yarn to rem 28 [30 : 30 : 32 : 32] sts and proceed as follows:

Next Row. – Knit to end.

Next Row. – S1, purl to last st, k1.

Work 4 rows dec once at neck edge in every row. 24 [26 : 26 : 28 : 28] sts.

Cont without shaping until armhole measures same as The Back, ending on right side.

Shape Shoulder

Next Row. – Cast off 8 [8 : 8 : 9 : 9] sts purlways, purl to last st, k1.

Next Row. – S1, knit to end.

Next Row. – Cast off 8 [9 : 9 : 9 : 9] sts purlways, purl to last st, k1.

Next Row. – S1, knit to end.

Cast off rem 8 [9 : 9 : 10 : 10] sts purlways.

THE SLEEVES (Both alike)

Using No. 31/4mm needles cast on 72 [76 : 76 : 80 : 80] sts.

1st Row. -cS1, k2, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, k1.

2nd Row. – S1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.

1st and 2nd rows form patt.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times.

Change to No. 4mm needles and cont in patt until work measures 4in or 10cm, ending on wrong side.

Shape Top

Cast off 1 st in patt at beg of next 24 [20 : 20 : 24 : 24] rows.

Cast off 2 sts in patt at beg of next 12 [16 : 16 : 16 : 16] rows.

Cast off rem 24 sts.

Sew up right shoulder seam.

THE NECKBAND

For all 5 sizes With right side facing, using No. 31/4mm needles and commencing at top of Left Shoulder pick up and knit 20 sts evenly along left side of neck, knit across 16 sts left on a thread at front of neck, pick up and knit 21 sts evenly along right side of neck and knit across 24 sts left on a thread at back of neck. (81 sts).

1st Row.— S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end.

2nd Row. — S1, k1, * p1, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice then 1st row once. Cast off loosely in rib.

THE TIE

For all 5 sizes Using No. 31/4mm needles cast on 3 sts.

1st Row.— S1, k2.

2nd Row.— S1, p1, k 1 . Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 30in or 76cm, ending with 2nd row. Cast off in rib.

TO MAKE UP Read Pressing Instructions. Sew up left shoulder and neckband seams. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Placing centre of tie to centre back of neck, sew tie in position evenly all round commencement of neckband. Tie in a bow at front of neck. Embroider as required.
