Gaily Stripe Holiday Jumper Pattern

MATERIALS: Of Patons Beehive Fingering, 3-ply (“Patonised” shrink-resist finish), 3 ozs. main shade, 1 oz. ball for first contrast, 3 ozs. second contrast. A pair each No. 11 and No. 10 “Beehive” needles.
MEASUREMENTS: To fit 33-35-inch bust; length from top of shoulders, 191 inches; sleeve seam, 5+ inches.
TENSION: 9 stitches to an inch, patted out lightly. N.B.—When changing colour, always have right side facing to do the knit row.

BACK

With No. 11 needles and main shade, cast on 100 sts. and work 3} inches k. 1, p. 1 rib. Change to No. 10 needles and, still in rib, increase at each end of next and every following 6th row until there are 128 sts. At the same time, when 71 inches have been worked in main shade, join in first contrast. Knit I row, then change to k. 1, p. 1 rib for 3 rows.

Now join in second contrast and knitone row, then continue in k. 1, p. 1 rib until this stripe measures 4 inches. Join in first contrast again, knit one row, then work 3 rows k. 1, p. 1 rib. Join in main shade and knit one row, then rib back. Shape armholes thus:—Cast off 5 sts. at beginning of next 4 rows, then k. 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row until 100 sts. remain. Continue in main shade until stripe measures 4 inches. Change to first contrast and knit one row, then 3 rows k.1, p.1 rib, as before.

Change to second contrast and knit one row, then work in k. 1, p. 1 rib until 3 inches have been done in this shade. With right side facing, shape shoulders by casting off 10 sts. at beginning of next 6 rows. Cast off remaining sts. in rib.

FRONT

Work exactly as for back until 2nd stripe in first contrast is reached: Work as follows:— Join in first contrast and knit 72, join in second contrast and rib 24, join in a second ball of first contrast and knit to end. Now work 3 rows k. 1, p. 1 rib in first contrast, keepingthe 24sts. for pocket in second contrast.

NEXT ROW: Slip first 68 sts. and last 28 sts. on to spare needles. Continue in rib on pocket sts., keeping first and last 4 sts. in first contrast and centre 24 in second contrast for 22 rows. (Twist wools round each other when changing colour to avoid a hole.) Now in first contrast, rib 4, k. 24, rib 4, then rib 3 rows and cast off.

Return’ to sts. on spare needles, with right side facing, join in main shade and knit 68, cast on 32, knit 28. Shape armholes and complete front to correspond with back.

SLEEVES

With No. 11 needles and main shade, cast on 90 sts. and work 14 rows k. 1, p. 1 rib. Change to No. 10 needles and first contrast and knit one row, then 3 rows k. I, p. 1 rib. Now join in second contrast and knit one row, then rib for 4 inches.

Join in first contrast and knit one row, then work 3 rows in rib. Now change to main shade and knit one row, then work in rib for 4 inches and at the same time shape sleeve top by casting off 5 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then k. 2 tog. at beginning of every row. Still decreasing, work another stripe in first contrast, then change to second contrast for another 2+ inches. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Join side, shoulder and sleeve seams; insert sleeves. Stitch sides of pocket in position carefully. Catch down pocket lining lightly so that sts. do not show through on right side of work. Press all seams lightly.
