Fair Isle Set Pattern

MATERMATERIALS: Of Patons Beehive Fingering, 3-ply (“Paton­ised” shrink-resist finish), 3 ozs. main shade, white, and odd balls of five con­trasting shades (red, yellow, green, mid and royal blue). A pair each Nos. 10, 11, and 12 “Beehive” needles.

MEASUREMENTS:

Scarf: 27 inches long, 5-1/2 inches wide; Beret: Diameter, 8-1/2 inches, head opening, slightly stretched, 19 inches; Gloves: All round hand, 6 inches: length from tip of middle finger to cuff edge, 8 inches.

TENSION: 8 stitches to an inch over Fair Isle on No. 10 needles; 8} stitches to an inch on No. 12 needles.

N.B.—When working from chart, repeat 6 sts. indicated by bracket right across, and last st. on knit rows, and first st. on purl rows, is marked with a X.

SCARF

With No. 10 needles and main shade, cast on 48 sts. and work 1 inch in k. 1, p. 1 rib. NEXT ROW Rib 12, k. 25, rib to end, increasing in last st. NEXT ROW: Rib 12, p. 25, rib 12.

Nov, keeping 12 sts. at each end in rib in math shade, work centre 25 sts. from chart for one complete pattern (29 rows). When changing from rib to Fair Isle, twist wools round each other to avoid a hole. Still keeping 12 rib sts. at each end, work centre 25 sts. in stocking-stitch in main shade and work straight for 18 inches. Work second end to correspond with first. Cast off.

BERET

With No. 12 needles, cast on 100 stn. and work inch in k. 1, p. 1 rib in main shade. Change to No. 10 needles. NEXT ROW: k. I, knit twice into next st., repeat from • to end. NEXT ROW: Purl back. NEXT ROW: • k. 5, knit twice in next st., repeat from • to end (175 sts.). Purl back.

Now continue working from chart and work one complete pattern straight. Break off contrasts, change to No. 11 needles and work 5 rows straight in main shade. NEXT ROW: k. 2 tog., • k. 21, k. 2 tog., k. 2 tog. through backs of stn. (t.b.l.), repeat from • all along, ending k.2 tog. t.b.l. Purl back. NEXT ROW: k. 2 tog., • k. 19, k. 2 tog., k. 2 tog. t.b.l., repeat from • ending k. 2 tog. t.b.l. Purl back. Continue decreasing thus on every alternate row until 21 sts. remain. NEXT ROW: Purl. NEXT ROW: k. 1, then k. 2 tog. to end. NEXT ROW: p. 2 tog. to last st., p. 1. Draw up and fasten off.

GLOVES

Left: With No. 12 needles and main shade, cast on 48 sts. and work 2 inches in k. 1, p. 1 rib. NEXT ROW: Knit. NEXT ROW: Purl, increase 1 st. at end of row (49 sts.).

Change to Fair Isle and work 7 rows from chart. 8TH ROW: In white, p. 24, increase twice in next st., p. 24. 9TH ROW: Pattern on 25 sts., k. 1 white for thumb, pattern on 25 sts. Now continue working from chart on first and last 25 sts., increase twice in thumb sts. on every alternate row (keeping thumb sts. in white) until there are 15 thumb sts. and you have worked 22nd row on chart.

NEXT ROW: Pattern 25, k. 16 white, turn, leaving last 24 stn. on spare needle for back of hand, p. 17, cast on 3, and leave remaining 24 sts. on another spare needle for palm. Working on 20 thumb sts., work 20 rows in stocking-stitch, decreasing 1 st. at end of 5th and 10th rows.

Shape top by k.1, k. 2 tog. alternately all along. Purl back. K. 2 tog. right across. Draw up and fasten off. Return to hand. Pick up 1 st. at base of thumb, work across 24 sts. on spare needle for back of hand to finish 23rd row. Then work straight on 49 hand stn. to end of Fair Isle. Work 3 rows in white. First finger: k. 33, turn, p. 15, cast on 3. Work 24 rows on these 18 stn. Shape top and finish as for thumb.

Second finger: Pick up 3 from cast-on sts. at base of first finger, k. 6, turn, p. 15 and cast on 3. Work 26 rows on these 18 sts. Finish off as before.

Third finger: As second, but work 24 rows instead of 26.

Fourth finger: Pick up 4 sts. at base of third finger, knit to end, turn, purl back, cast on 1 (15 sts.). Work 21 rows and finish as before.

Right: Work to correspond with left by casting on the 3 sts. for thumb before purling the 17 sts., and for fingers, before purling the 15 sts.

TO MAKE UP

Press all parts carefully on wrong side under a damp cloth. Sew up finger and side seams on gloves and opening at base of thumb. Join beret seam.
