BACK

With No. 11 needles, cast on 131 sts. and work 1 inch stocking-stitch in main shade, ending with a purl row.

Start pattern:—lsT ROW: With first contrast, k. 2, * slip 1, k. 5; repeat from * to last 3 sts. slip 1, k. 2. 2ND ROW: In first contrast, p. 2, * slip 1, p. 5; repeat from * to last 3 sts., slip 1, p. 2.

5TH AND 6TH ROWS: As 1st and 2nd, using 2nd contrast shade. 7TH AND 8TH ROWS: As 3rd and 4th, using main shade.

When 1 inch is done and the back of work is facing, fold up the first inch of stocking-stitch to make a hem and work together in pattern 1 st. from left-hand needle together with 1 from cast-on edge. Continue in pattern until back measures 3 inches, then decrease for waist by changing to No. 12 needles and decreasing at each end of next and every following 4th row six times. Work 1 inch straight, then change back to No. 11 needles and continue in pattern, increasing at each end of next and every following 6th row until there are again 131 sts. Work straight until side edge measures 14 inches, then shape armholes by casting off 8 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then k. 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row until 95 remain. Work straight until back measures 21,E inches, then shape shoulders by casting off 12 sts. at beginning of next 6 rows. Cast off.

FRONTS
Left: Start with pocket lining. With No.11 needles and main shade, cast on 35 sts. and work 3 inches stocking-stitch, ending with a knit row. Leave sts. on a spare needle.

With No. 11 needles and main shade, cast on 77 sts. and work 1 inch stocking-stitch, ending with a knit row at front edge. Cast on 6 at beginning of next row, purl to end.

Change to pattern as for back, but keep the 6 cast-on sts. in plain stocking-stitch stripes, i.e., without slipping any sts. When 1 inch is done, work hem as for back, but ignore the border-stitches at front edge, as these are turned back later for facing. Now work straight until front measures 3 inches, then shape for waist by changing to No. 12 needles and decrease at side edge on next and every following 4th row six times. Meanwhile, when work measures 4 inches, work to within last 20 sts. of front border. Turn and work on 35 sts. in pattern for pocket border for inch more, then cast off. Rejoin wool where you left off main work and continue in pattern, working in 35 pocket sts. from spare needle, on next row, in place of those cast off. Meanwhile, when all waist decreases and one more inch straight are worked, change back to No. 11 needles, and start to increase for side by increasing at side edge on next and every following 6th row until there are again 77 sts. on needle. Work straight until side edge measures 14 inches, counting stripes carefully to see that they match back. Shape armhole by casting off 8 sts. at side edge, then decrease at this side on every other row until 59 remain.

Work straight until front edge measures 184 inches, then, with back of work facing, shape neck by casting off 12 sts. on next row, and 3 on next 3 alternate rows, same edge, and thereafter k. 2 tog. at neck edge every row until 36 remain.

Work straight until front is same length as back, then shape shoulder by casting off 12 sts. at beginning of next 3 alternate rows, armhole side.

Right: Work to correspond with left, with shapings at opposite ends of needles and 10 buttonholes up front border. To make buttonholes:—With front of work facing, k. 2, cast off 3, 5 in pattern, cast off 3, work to end and back, casting on three over each of the groups cast off in previous row. The first two come in 2nd row after bottom hem is made and remainder at 14-inch intervals. See that the number of stripes between each is even.

SLEEVES

With main shade, cast on 59 sts. and work 1 inch stocking-stitch, using No. 11 needles. Change to pattern and work 1 inch, then make hem as for bottom of back. Work 1 more inch straight, then increase at each end of next and every following 6th row until there are 107 sts. Work straight until side edge is required length, then shape top.

Cast off 8 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then k. 2 tog. at each end of next 12 alternate rows. Work 2 inches straight, then keep

side edges straight, but decrease on every other row each side of centre 19 sts. until 47 remain, then at side edges as well on following alternate rows until 19 remain. Cast off.

COLLAR

Join shoulder seams and turn back the cast-on sts. of each front border, working round each buttonhole to strengthen. With front of work facing and No. 12 needles, pick up and knit 119 sts. evenly all round neck.

Work 24 inches stocking-stitch in main shade, then 1 inch in pattern. Leave sts. on the needle. With wrong side of work facing, pick up and knit 119 sts. all round inside of neck and work exactly as for first half. Cast off the two lots of stitches together, loosely.

TO MAKE UP

Press pieces carefully on wrong side under a damp cloth. Join side and sleeve seams; insert sleeves. Stitch down pocket-flaps and sew on buttons. If you use button-moulds make tiny crochet bags to stitch over them. Give seams a final press. Sew press-stud at neck and lower edges.
