Two No. 11 and two No. 9 BEEHIVE or MILWARD DISC needles, measured by BEEHIVE gauge.

Check your tension by casting on 12 sts. on No. 9 needles and working 15 rows stocking stitch. Cast off. The square should measure 2 in. each way.

Work straight until Back measures 134 in., ending with right side facing for next row.

Keeping continuity of patt., shape armholes by casting off 7 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Dec. 1 st. at each end of every row until 85 [88, 91, 94, 97] sts. re­main.**

Work straight until Back measures 204 [21, 214, 22, 224] in., ending with right side facing for next row.

Shape shoulders by casting off 8 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows, then 7 [8, 8, 9, 9] sts. at beg. m following 2 rows. Leave remaining 39 [40, 43, 44, 47] sts. on a spare needle.

FRONT

Work as for Back to **.

Work straight until Front measures 181 [19, 191, 191, 20] in., ending with right side facing for next row.

Shape neck as follows:-

Next rowPatt. 32 [33, 34, 35, 36], turn and slip remaining sts. on a spare needle.

Continue on these 32 [33, 34, 35, 36] sts. for first side, dec. 1 st. at neck edge on every row until 23 [24, 24, 25, 25] sts. remain.

Work straight until Front matches Back at armhole edge, ending with right side facing for next row.

Shape shoulder by casting off 8 sts. at beg. of next and following alt. row.

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off remaining 7 [8, 8, 9, 9] sts. With right side facing, slip centre 21 [22, 23, 24, 25] sts. on a length of yarn, rejoin yarn to remaining sts. and patt. to end.

Complete to correspond with first side, reversing shapings.

Using a fine back-stitch seam, join left shoulder seam.

With right side facing and No. 11 needles, K.39 [40, 43, 44, 47] back sts. dec. 2 sts. evenly, knit up 18 [18, 20, 22, 22] sts. down left side of neck, K.21 [22, 23, 24, 25] front sts., knit up 18 [18, 20, 22, 22] up right side of neck. (94 [96, 104, 110, 114] sts.).

Work 10 rows K.1, P.1 rib.

Cast off evenly in rib.

Using a flat seam for ribbing and a fine back-stitch seam for remainder, join right shoulder seam and Neck­band, side and sleeve seams.

Insert Sleeves.

Keeping continuity of patt., shape top by casting off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Dec. 1 st. at each end of next row. Work 3 rows straight.

Rep. last 4 rows 2 [3, 3, 4, 4] times more.

Now dec. 1 st. at each end of next and every alt. row until 29 sts. remain.

Next row-P.

Cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

MAKE UP AND NECKBAND

Do not press.

Using a fine back-stitch seam, join 14 left shoulder seam.

With right side facing and No. 11 15 needles, K.33 [33, 37, 37, 41] back sts., knit up 42 [46, 50, 54, 58] down left side of neck, K.19 [19, 21, 21, 16 23] front sts., knit up 42 [46, 50, 54, 58] up right side of neck (136 [144, 158, 166, 180] sts.).

Work 10 rows K.1, P.1 rib.

Cast off evenly in rib.

Using a flat seam for ribbing and a fine back-stitch seam for remainder, join right shoulder seam and Neck­band, side and sleeve seams.Insert Sleeves.
