Saddle Shoulder Sweater

A Classic for the man in your life

Materials: (22, 24, 26) oz. of Double Knit; 1 pair each of Nos. 5 and 8 knitting needles; a set of four No. 8 needles pointed at both ends.

Tension: Over the patt., 5 sts. to 1 in. and 15 rows to 2 in.

Measurements: To suit (38 to 40, 40 to 42, 42 to 44) in. chest sizes; length from shoulder. (24, 24-1/2, 25) in. ; sleeve seam (19, 19-1/2, 19-1/2) in.

Note on the sizes: The foll. instructions are for all sizes. The first set of figures in squared brackets applies to the 38 to 40 in. chest size; the second set to the 40 to 42 in. and the third set to the 42 to 44 in. chest. Figures not in squared brackets apply to all sizes.

The Back

With No. 8 needles, cast on (98. 102. 108) sts. and work 3 in. in k.1, p.1 rib, but inc. 1 st. at end of the last row for 2nd size only. Change to No. 5 needles.

1st patt. row: P.1, k.1, p.1, (take point of needle behind first st. on left-hand needle and k. into 2nd st. t.b.l., then k. 1st st. and let both sts. drop off needle in the usual way, p.1, k.1, p.1) to end.

2nd row: P.

These 2 rows form the patt. Rep. them until work measures 6 in. from start (cast-on edge), then inc. 1 st. at each end of next row and every foll. 10th row until there are (108, 113, 118) sts. Cont. straight until work measures 16 in. from start.

To shape armholes. cast off (4. 5. 5.) sts. at the start of the next 2 rows and 2 sts. at the start of foll. 2 rows, then dec. 1 st. at the start of next 14 rows and (2, 2, 3) sts. at start of the foll. 2 rows. Break off wool and leave rem. (28, 31, 34) sts. on a st. holder.

The Front

With No. 8 needles, cast on (102, 108, 112) sts. and work 3 in in k.1, p.1 rib, but inc. 1 st at end of last row for 1st and 3rd sizes. Change to No. 5 needles. Rep. the 2 patt. rows given for back until work measures 6 in. from start, then inc. 1st. at each end of next row and every foll. 10th row until there are (113, 118. 123) sts. Cont. straight until work measures 16 in. from start.

To shape armholes, cast off (4, 5, 5.) sts. at start of next 2 rows and 2 sts. at start of next 2 rows and 2 sts. at start of the foll. 2 rows, then dec. 1st. at start of next 8 rows. Work (26, 28, 30) rows straight on rem. (93, 96, 101) sts.

* Next row: Patt. (41, 42. 44) sts.; t. Leaving rem. sts. on a spare needle, cont. on first set.Cast of 2 sts. at start of next row, then dec. 1st. at neck edge on next row and the foll. (6, 7, 8) alt. rows, after which work 1 row straight. Next row: Cast off 4 for shoulder, patt. to last 2 sts., take 2 tog Next row: Work without shaping. Rep. last 2 rows once. Cast off 4 sts. at the start of the next row and the foll. 4 alt. rows; work 1 row, then cast off rem. The Sleeves (both alike)

With No. 8 needles, cast on (48, 52, 52) and work 3 in. in k.1, p.1 rib, but inc. 1 st. at end of last row for 2nd and 3rd sizes. Change to No. 5 needles and rep. the 2 patt. rows given for back twice. then cont. in patt., but inc. 1st. at each end of next row and every foll. 8th row until there are (72, 79. 81) sts. Work straight until sleeve measures (19. 19-1/2. 19-1/2) in. from start.

To shape top, cast off (4, 5, 5) sts. at the start of the next 2 rows and 2 sts. at the start of the foll. 2 rows, then dec. 1 st. at start of every row until 24 sts. rem. Cast off 1 st. at the start of the next 2 rows to allow for the seam. Change to No. 8 needles and proceed in k.1. p.1 rib for (5-3/4, 5-3/4, 6) in. to form shoulder yoke. Break off wool and leave sts. on a st. holder.

To Complete

Press work lightly on wrong side with a warm iron over a damp cloth. avoiding the ribbing. Join yokes to shoulder edges of front and back then join shaped sleeve-top edges to arm-holes. Join side and sleeve seams.

The Neckband: With right side of work facing you, join wool to left side of the neck at front shoulder seam. then. using a No. 8 double-pointed needle, pick up and k. (44. 48, 52) sts. along front neck edge; with 2nd double-pointed needle, k. the 22 sleeve sts. from st. holder and (14, 15, 17) of the back neck sts.; with 3rd needle, k. the rem. back neck sts., starting with k.2 tog. for the 2nd size only, then k. the 22 sts. of 2nd size only, then k the 22 sts. of 2nd size only, then k. the 22 sts. of 2nd sleeve. Work in rounds of k.1 , p.1 for 4 in., then cast off ribwise with a No. 5 needle. Fold neckband double and loosely fell down cast-off edge on wrong side.
