Vintage Jumper Reversible Pattern

MATERIALS: 6 ozs. Patons Beehive Fingering, 3-ply (“Patonised” shrink-resist finish) in main shade, and 1 oz. of contrast. A pair each No. 10 and No. 12 “Beehive” needles. Four press-fasteners. A spare needle, pointed both ends for cabling.

MEASUREMENTS: To fit 34-36-inch bust; length from top of shoulders, 19 inches; sleeve seam, 5i inches.

TENSION: 8 stitches to an inch on No. 10 needles.

N.B.—To cable 4, slip next 2 stitches on spare needle and leave to front of work, knit next 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from spare needle.

BACK

With No. 12 needles, cast on 125 sts. and work in pattern:-

32ND ROW: As 2nd.

These 32 rows form pattern. When work measures 31 inches change to No. 10 needles and continue in pattern until back measures 12 inches, ending with 16th row of pattern. Shape armholes by casting off 6 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows and 5 at beginning of following 2 rows (103 sts.). Continue straight until back measures 181 inches. then shape shoulders by casting off 11 sts. at begin­ning of next 6 rows.

FRONT

Work exactly as for back until tront measures 17 inches, ending with 4th row of pattern (103 sts.). Shape neck as follows:-Pattern 42, cast off 19, pattern to end.

Continue on these last 42 sts., decreasing I st. at neck edge on every row until 33 sts. remain. Work straight until front is same length as back. Shape shoulder by casting off 11 sts. at beginning of next 3 alternate rows armhole edge.

Join wool to remaining sts. and work to corres­pond.

SLEEVES

With No. 10 needles, cast on 103 sts. and work in pattern for 5k inches. Shape top by casting off 3 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, 2 sts. at beginning of following 4 rows, then k. 2 tog. at each end of every row until 62 remain, then at beginning of every row until 40 remain. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Press pieces lightly on wrong side under a damp cloth. Join side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Insert sleeves. With contrast wool, make plaits for collar and cuffs. Stitch plait round ends of sleeves and round front of neck. Fasten to back of neck with press-studs, to allow for stretch over head.
