8 (8) (8) ozs. for sleeveless version, 13 (14) (15) ozs. for long-sleeved version of either Emu Zephyr 3-ply Botany or Emu Scotch 3-ply Fingering. 1 pair each Emu Knitting Needles, Size 9 and 11.

BACK

Using No. 11 needles, cast on 157 (166) (175) sts. and work in k. 1, p. 1 ribbing for 4 ms. Change to No. 9 needles.

Pattern

1st row. (right side): P. 4, * k.5, p.4, rep. from * to end of row.

2nd row. K.4, * p.5, 6.4, rep. from * to end of the row:

3rd row. P.4, *slip next 3 sts. on to spare needle, hold in front of work, k. next 2 sts., k.3 sts. from the spare needle (cable twist), p.4, rep. from * to end of row.

4th row. Rep. 2nd row.

5th row. Rep.. 1st row.

6th row. Rep. 2nd row.

Rep. these 6 rows until back measures 13 ((38)
(14) ins. from beg., ending on a wrong side row.

Armhole Shaping

Cast off 8 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 4 sts. beg. of next 6 rows. Dec. 1 st. at beg. and end of every 2nd row until 99 (108) (117) sts. remain. Cont. in patt. until armhole measures 9 ins.

Shoulder Shaping

Cast off 8 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 4 (5) (6) sts. at beg. of next 8 rows. Change to No. 11 needles and work in k.1, p.1 ribbing on the remaining 51 (52) (53) sts. for 8 rows. Cast off loosely in ribbing.

FRONT

Work as for back until armhole shaping is completed and 99 (108) (117) sts. remain. finishing on the wrong side row.

Neck Shaping

Next row. Work 47 (51) (55) sts. in pall.. cast off 5 (6) (7) sts., work to end in patt., Leave sts. for right shoulder on a spare needle. Cont. with the left shoulder, keeping armhole edge straight, and dec. 1 st. at neck edge on every 2nd row until 24 (28)134 sts. remain. Work without further Owing until front measures same as back. Cast off 8 sts. at beg. of next row com­mencing at armhole edge, and 4 (5) (6) sts. at beg. of following 4 alternate rows. Work the second shoulder to match.

FRONT NECKBAND

Using No. 11 needles and with the right side of work towards you, knit up 76 sts. along the left neck edge.

(N.B.-Do not pick up con off as. az centre.)

Work in k.1, p.1, rib for 8 rows. Cast off loosely in rib.

Work the second side of the neck to match. The centre front ends of these ribbed bands are overlapped and sewn against cast-off sts. Join shoulder seams, using a backstitch.

ARMHOLE BANDS FOR SLEEVELESS VERSION

Using No. II Needles and with right side or work towards you, knit up 172 (178) (184) sts. around armhole. Work in k.1, p.I ribbing for 8 rows. Cast off loosely in rib.

SLEEVES

Using No. I I needles, cast on 78 (80) (85) sts. and work in k.1, p.1 rib for 2 inches. Change to No. 9 needles and patt. as follows :­1st row. (Right side facing) P.5 (6) (4) * k.5, p.4, rep. from *, last rep. ending p.5 (6) (4). 2nd row. K.5 (6) (4) p.5, k.4, rep. from *, last rep. ending k.5, (6) (4).

3rd row. P.5 (6) (4) then rep. 3rd row of pats. for Back from *, last rep. ending p.5 (6) (4)-4th row. As 2nd row.

5th row. As 1st row.

6th row. As 2nd row.

Continue, taking all made sts. gradually into the pattern and increasing 1st. at each end of 7th and every following 6th row, until there are 126 (130) (139) sts. on the needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 19 (196) (20) inches from the beginning.

Shape Top

Keeping pattern correct, cast off 4 sts. at the beginning of next 4 rows, then decrease 1 st. at each end of next and every following alternate row 16 (15) (15) times, then on every row until the. are 5. (46) (47) sts. 126 on the needle.. Cast off 5 (6) (6) sts. at the beginning of following 6 (4) (4) rows. Cast off.

TO COMPLETE PULLOVER

Pinout to correct measurements and press work lightly on the wrong side, using a hot iron over a damp cloth omitting ribbing. Sew side and sleeve scums, using a backstitch. So sleeves into armholes. Press all seams.
